Bed and Breakfast Etiquette

This is intended as a short guide for people who are not familiar with the Bed and Breakfast system and how it operates in Ireland. The list is not intended to cover all aspects of Bed and Breakfast and indeed in different parts of the country different guidelines may apply

Q:  What is a Bed and Breakfast  (B&B)

A: This generally speaking is a family home that has been adapted or purpose built to cater for receiving guests, some B&B's are a little larger and more like small  hotels, especially in the larger tourist towns. Most B&B's are members of Quality Approved, a section of the Irish Tourist Board, and are regularly inspected to make sure the accommodation they provide meet certain minimum standards.

Q: Do we share the same facilities?

A: Most B&B's have separate toilets and shower rooms for guests. Look out for the term  "Ensuite" which means you have your own private bathroom connected to your accommodation. Most will also have separate lounges for guest use

Q: How much is Bed and Breakfast and what do I get for my money.

A: Prices can vary from place to place, but you will get the type of accommodation you pay for, average prices would be between Euro 30.00 and Euro 35.00 and include full Irish Breakfast.

Q: Do I sleep and eat  in the same rooms or part of the house as the family?

A: Generally most B&B's are purpose built and have separate accommodation for Family and Guests

Q: Am I expected to bring a present for the host.

A: Not generally expected but for extra special service or exceptional accommodation a small gift may sometimes be given.

Q: Can I pay by credit card?

A: Some of the larger B&B's will accept credit cards but most will take cash only.

Q: Do I have to be in by a certain time at night?

A: Most houses will issue you with two Keys, one for your room and one for the front door so you can come and go as you please. Just remember if you are late in, that other people may be asleep. So try not to make too much noise

Q: What time do I have to check in by?

A: Most B&B's will hold your room for check in till 6.00pm if you are going to be later you better ring ahead and let them know otherwise the room may be sold.
